Thick and rough beards are often seen as a symbol of power and a measure of masculinity in a man. However, growing a moustache or a full beard needs patience and perseverance. It begs the question, what can you do to make your beard grow quicker? This is one of the most common questions we get asked. So we got one of our researches to do some digging to find out. Here are five simple tips we came up with.

Beard in mind, some of these may seem like common sense, but it's surprising how easy it is to overlook them with the busy modern lifestyle. For the more extreme measures, we've added a bonus 6th tip at the end.

Side note, most of these tips are about optimising testosterone because this hormone is primarily responsible for turning the very fine vellus hairs on your face & neck into thick terminal hair which forms the basis of a good beard.

1. Get enough rest 

Testosterone plays a vital role in the growth of a thick, masculine beard, and having adequate rest is among the best ways to increase the testosterone levels in your body. Research studies have confirmed that lack of enough sleep results in a substantial decline in a man’s testosterone levels. This is because sleeping allows your body to regenerate testosterone, consequently offering your beard a secret masculine ingredient. Therefore, sleeping a full eight hours can stimulate faster growth of your beard.

Other natural ways to help testosterone levels are the right kinds of exercise (see next tip), get some sun (for Vitamin D which is key for testosterone) & no fapping (a 2003 Chinese study that found that men who refrain from masturbation for seven days experience a 145.7% spike in testosterone levels on the seventh day).

2. Exercise 

Exercising should be an integral part of every man’s life, and this is beneficial to your beard as well as your body’s overall health. Through exercise, you can cut down on excess weight and your stress levels. How is this related to making your beard grow faster? Well, just like with sleep, exercise helps your body in the regeneration of testosterone. Additionally, it improves blood flow to help deliver nutrients to the beard’s follicles. 

3. Care for the skin underneath 

For speedy and emphatic growth of your facial hair, the skin beneath needs to be well-cared for. Therefore, you must embrace self-improvement routines like frequently using a moisturizer, exfoliating once or twice weekly as well as washing your face thoroughly every morning and night. Doing this ensures your skin is hydrated & your pores are not clogged up with dead skin & other junk. Healthy skin makes for healthy hair. 

4. Reduce your stress levels 

Whenever you are under increased stress, the ability of your body to regenerate testosterone falls. Likewise, stress hampers vitamins flowing to your facial hair follicles. If your life is particularly taxing, you should start breathing exercises, jogging, meditation, or any other activity that helps you think less about your apprehensions. Once your body realises its stress level has fallen, you will be rewarded with a healthy beard. 

Stress reduction & mindfulness challenge. Try taking long slow breathes, 4 seconds in and 4 seconds out for 1 minute twice a day. When you first wake up in the morning, and just before you're about to go to bed. This exercise will help you to become conscious of tension in your body & shallow breathing that can be caused by stress. If you consciously take long, slow, even breathes in and out, you will feel the stress evaporate & essentially trick your body into relaxing.

5. Use quality beard products 

Yeah yeah, a beard care company telling you to use beard products. Pfft! But bear with us for a second. One of the easiest things to do for your beard is give it time to grow out. While you're waiting for that to happen you may as well make the the journey a great experience. Imagine a soft, clean & stunningly fragrant beard emerge from your face. Imagine the attention you'll get when people notice that lustrous healthy looking hair. Top shelf beard products such as beard shampoos, balms & oils make this happen. As we noted in tip 3, cleaning with a quality beard cleanser will also help to remove dead skin & debris to clear the way for growth.

6. (Bonus tip) Medical interventions

If all else fails, there may be some medical options that are suitable. Bear in mind that we are not doctors and you should always consult a qualified health care professional before making a decision. One of the main medical options for making your beard grow faster is minoxidil. Sold in a variety of forms as a topical treatment for scalp hair loss, it may help stimulate beard hair growth.

However, this drug can affect your blood pressure so should be used with caution. It also (to our knowledge) hasn't been scientifically tested on beards specifically so if you used it, it would be off-label. Again we must stress, speak to your doctor first.
